"On the Road Again with Man's Best Friend: A Selective Guide to New England's Bed & Breakfast Inns, Hotels, and Resorts that Welcome You and Your Dog"
by Dawn and Robert Habgood

Guide Rating -

Does Fido pout every time the suitcase comes out? Dawn and Robert Habgood's guide to dog-friendly New England accommodations is the perfect antidote for drooping tail syndrome. The New England edition of the couple's "On the Road Again with Man's Best Friend" series contains detailed reviews of dozens of B&Bs, inns, resorts, and hotels in all six New England states where your four-legged companion will be welcomed and in some cases even pampered.

The inspiration for this traveling with dogs guidebook series arose from the Habgoods' own reluctance to leave behind their three golden retrievers whenever the travel bug beckoned. The New England book, like others in the series, highlights the best of the region's accommodations that not only allow dogs but provide "warmth, charm, and quality that even dog-less vacationers would find appealing." A secondary section of the book titled "The Best of the Rest" includes simple, directory-style listings for additional B&Bs, inns, motels, and hotels that permit dogs but did not merit complete reviews.

For each establishment reviewed, the authors first provide practical details on the number of rooms, rates, payment options, policies regarding dogs and children, and seasons of operation. Then, they dig right in, finding the "juicy bones" of information vacationing dog lovers really need. They particularly focus on attractions and recreational facilities near each inn that will be fun for dogs to visit, too!

Is your best friend already standing with his nose pointing at the door? His ears will really perk up when you read him the description of Colonial Winterport Inn (207-223-5307) in Winterport, Maine, where pups feast on prime rib, or The Applewood Farms Inn (800 717-4262) in Ledyard, Connecticut, where dogs have the run of the house and the 33 acres of trails adjacent to the inn as long as their human is in tow.

Dog bookDog lovers who don't want to deprive their pooches of the ears-blowing, tongue-flapping joy of a road trip but don't then necessarily want to take their animal companions antique shopping or sightseeing will also find accommodations such as Topnotch at Stowe Resort (800 451-8686) that offer dog-sitting services.

The small, cramped type in this guidebook is a bit difficult to read, but it is evidence of just how much research is packed into its more than 300 pages. If taking the dog along is among your priorities when you are planning your visit to New England, be sure to get your paws on a copy of this helpful guide that does all of the legwork for you in finding pet-friendly places to stay.
